NEW MEMBER BROCHURE
Our Goal is to reduce water pollution in Stonington harbors - between the Mystic River and Pawcatuck River - and restore a healthy marine habitat.
As a group, CUSH provides rapid citizen feedback to municipal water quality groups, collaborates with other marine organizations, and actively works to monitor non-point sources of pollution through on-going water testing.
Education is another important activity. A variety of programs make residents aware of what they should or should not do to help restore these beautiful coastal waters.
How can you help?
Landscape, garden, and agricultural chemicals pose two dangers. They contain nitrogen and other nutrients that stimulate plant growth - including algae in the water. When large algae blooms die off, they are broken down by billions of bacteria in the water that use up vast amounts of oxygen needed to sustain fish and marine life. Also, many lawn-care chemicals are derived from petroleum and have hormone-like actions that are slowly being linked to abnormal development and illness in fish, reptiles, birds, and humans. Avoid using any lawn chemicals along harbors or the rivers, streams and wetlands feeding into them.
Storm drains do not empty into treatment facilities, so anything that enters from the street, such as motor oil, paints or construction debris, and animal waste, washes into the harbor. Do not allow any substance to enter a storm drain that you wouldn't want to swim in.

Boat holding tank discharge into our harbors is illegal, but many captains forget about the “grey water” from washing dishes or cleaning their boats. Go to our web site for a copy of How Boaters Can Help flier.
Septic systems that are not regularly pumped out often contaminate ground water along the coast with nutrients and pathogens. Inspect your system annually.
Household chemicals can be harmful to your health and that of the harbor. Buy “Green,” non-toxic cleaning products. Take oil-based paints, solvents, oven cleaners, wood preservatives or strippers, pest sprays and herbicides, gasoline or auto fluids, and all other dangerous chemicals to Hazardous Materials collection locations announced through the Town and on our web site.
Conserve water at home and businesses to significantly reduce the volume of wastewater discharged to sewage treatment facilities.
Do not flush trash, chemicals, condoms or medicines because they contain substances sewage plants are not designed to process and they end up in the harbor. Instead, dump old medications into trash taken for incineration in Town yellow bags.
